SCG States Oct 17/18

As I write this, the final round of our weekend of Battle for Zendikar prerelease events are wrapping up.  What better time than to talk about our next big community event?  We are hosting Star City Games Autumn State Championships in just a few weeks, and are very excited for the new shift in Standard.  The brewers have been convening all weekend, theory-crafting and prophesying what is about to storm the scene.  On our end we have been gathering some of the best judges that the state has to offer and figuring how to give you the best event possible.

Preregister here.

Star City Games has a standard for event payouts based on attendance:
States Payouts
This list is pretty strong!  We are going to be hosting the event in shop this time around, and we will need to put an attendance cap on things.  Because of this, we wanted to give strong incentive for people to preregister for the events.  For each threshold we reach in the preregistration pool one person will be selected at random to win the listed prize.  With a nod to what the organizers of GP’s have been doing, here is our preregistration bonus:

Your head judge for Saturday will be Billy Gilmore and Maximilian Schroeder for Sunday.  For those wishing to spend the night and play both events (and get entered in the prize drawing twice if preregistered) there are plenty of hotels in town with the Red Roof Inn (on E Texas Ave) and a Quality Inn (on N Providence Rd) in walking distance.

I am super excited, I hope you are too!

Iron Man

You must play 5 events, and you may count the cut to top X in the Sunday game as a separate event.  All Iron Man competitors must register their pools.  There is a follow-up event for all competitors, and are invited back to Magelings for a special sealed event on Sunday Oct 11th starting at 1pm.  Players must register by 12:45pm, the event is free.

Why Iron Man?   It is an amazing time, and you’ll meet other hardcore players like yourself.  It truly is an endurance challenge, so get ready to push yourself through Saturday.  Besides all the great stuff we give out over the prerelease weekend, all Iron (Wo)Men are invited to another game for FREE!  This is modified sealed, you must build a 60 card deck with what you opened during the prerelease.  We love this challenge so much that we break out the special prizes for this event, in the past we’ve given out GOLD.  Stay tuned for updates to the Iron Man prize pool.

Timing details:
Player seating will be posted 25 minutes after the above mentioned times.  Announcements will be made and product will be handed out.  For the midnight event we will be seating players at 12:01 am and handing out immediately after announcments.  There will be AT MOST 40 minutes to build decks before round 1 pairings are posted.  Midnight pairings at 12:45 am at the latest is our goal.  That gives roughly an hour from the posted time before game 1 starts.  Players who  are not ready for round 1, showed up late for example, will receive a loss for that round.

Announcing Schedule Changes

Hello there folks.  School is starting back up and things are busily buzzing around the shop.  We have some changes coming up this fall, but I wanted to focus on our gaming schedule today.  We have moved Yu-Gi-Oh! to Tuesday nights to allow for more time and space for D&D Encounters on Wednesdays.

Also, starting in September we are holding x2 SCG Game Night in the shop.  Magic League and Magic Modern format will both be part of this program, so you don’t have to choose between a format you like and the cool swag you need.  Additionally, September marks the kick-off point for our latest Games Workshop Escalation League.  This time around, Fantasy!

Without further ado, here is our schedule:

Kaijudo has rotating formats that follow this sequence (Thursday/Saturday):
1st Standard / Open
2nd Standard / Draft
3rd Open / Standard
4th Draft / Standard
5th Standard / Standard

A Call to Arms WHFB

Calling all heroes and heroines!  Our next Escalation League is about to kick off, and this time around we are playing Warhammer Fantasy Battles (WHFB).

Have you ever wanted to command a troop of High Elves?  Or perhaps lead an army of the undead?  Would your mighty ogre’s make the ground tremble?  Now is your chance.

The league will have 4 increments/levels and run September to January.  December and January will be treated as a “bridge month” so as to work around all the holiday and student schedules.

Cost to join the league is $10.  Entries will be used to provide a closing pizza party as well as prizes for top league players, as well as a sportsmanship award and a painting award.

August: 250 points
Get your feet wet and try out some armies.  No dedicated list is needed and you can switch factions as much as you want.  This month will be unscored, so new players please try things out and experienced players may want to give something different a shot.

September: 500 points
Faction must be chosen prior to being paired.  Core units (min 2) and a single character of no more than 100 points is allowed.  For undead armies, it is presumed your focus of Necromatic power is off field.

October: 1000 points
You may drop 1 unit
You may adjust an existing unit, with no more than a 100 point difference from it’s former incarnation.
List composition rules:
Max: 25% Heroes/Lords/Characters
Max: 40% Specials
No Rares

November: 1500 points
You may drop 1 unit
You may adjust an existing unit, with no more than a 200 point difference from it’s former incarnation.
List composition per standard rules

December/January: 2000 points
You may drop 1 unit
You may adjust an existing unit, with no more than a 200 point difference from it’s former incarnation.
List composition per standard rules

This is a 7th Edition event.  Game mechanics, Special Rules and FAQ’s from the most recent release are live.  Each player must bring a 1500 point Battle-Forged army.  Armies must have 1 primary detachment; an optional maximum of 1 allied detachment using 7 edition ally matrix is permitted.

Print version of codices are preferred for ease of rules review.

  • Three, 2 hour rounds, with random pairings (no repeats if possible); with a 15 minute break between rounds.

  • First round begins at 11:00 am.

  • Lunch Break: one hour and 15 minutes (includes 15 minute round break) between first and second round.  If you complete your first round game early you may depart for lunch after your scores have been submitted.

  • Each round will be assigned a round score based on game results, all round scores will be tabulated in order to determine winner for event.  Round scoring will not be used to determine pairing for next round. Round scoring: Major Victory/Tabling= 7pts, Victory= 5pts; Draw= 2pts, Loss= 0 (major victory is considered when a player scores double +1 victory point more than opponent).

  • See “Tournament and House Rules” for more details regarding time limits and tournament scoring.

  • Players are encouraged to bring a tray or display board to easily carry their armies from table to table.

Restrictions:

  • All tables will be pre-set with terrain prior to event.  No deliberate alteration of table is permitted (see restrictions regarding fortifications).

M14 Prerelease

It is just around the corner, the latest core set for Magic the Gathering.  We want to go all out and celebrate this 20th anniversary of Magic, and so we are playing all day on Saturday!  That’s right, we aren’t shutting down.

We are going to run 6 games back to back starting with a double Friday Night Magic leading into the Magic 2014 prerelease which kicks off at 12:01am Saturday morning.  Prerelease events will run until about 9 or so Saturday night, and we will pick it back up Sunday morning at 10am for another two events.  That’s pretty magical!

Each event costs $25, and we will have open dueling over the weekend for $15.  Events are run over four rounds and take about five hours total.  We payout based on record starting at 2-X and going all the way to 4-0.  On top of that we give away hundreds of dollars of stuff as door prizes.  Like what? The usual gaming accessory stuff you are used to I suppose, but also swag from WotC and for every 50 players in an event we give away a box of the upcoming set.  With seating for over 100 players in the house that makes for a lot of spell-slinging!

Got what it takes to play big?  I mean really BIG.  We offer the Iron Man challenge to our players.  Take your best five results of the events and compare with the other competitors.  Ok, so that’s just bragging rights.  Nat also kicks in some choice cards from his collection, the old dusty part before they had block cycles.  We are also working on something special for all I.M. competitors and the M14 Iron Man… but we can’t give out all our secrets 😉

Event 1 Friday Night Midnight/Saturday 12:01am – Sealed
Event 2 Saturday 5am – Sealed
Event 3 Saturday 10am – 2HG Sealed
Event 4 Saturday 3pm – Sealed
Event 5 Sunday 10am – Sealed
Event 6 Sunday 3pm – Sealed – Iron Man awarded at the end of this event
