Iron Man

There are changes to Iron Man.  Like before you must play 5 events, and you may count the cut to top X in the Sunday game as a separate event.  All Iron Man competitors must register their pools.  There is a follow-up event for all competitors, and are invited back to Magelings for a Quasi-Constructed on Sunday January 25th starting at 1pm.  Players must register by 12:45pm, the event is free.  Decks may be comprised of only cards from the registered pools.  Deck registrations will be made available no later than Wednesday prior to the game.  Without sufficient registered pools, the player will not be allowed to compete the following Sunday.

Why Iron Man?   We have hinted that there is a big prize and Iron Man is the only way to it.  Every prerelease this block counts, that’s right a block long competition is running and you can join in now if you haven’t already.  Iron Man Sunday is a standing tradition that continues to grow.  If we have 12+ contestants on Sunday, they will find a new sealed Duel Deck: Anthologies waiting at the Top 8.  Missing out on an Iron Man Sunday will not prevent the player from the final prize but may hamper their efforts.  This is solely based on the performances of the other competitors.

A New Year, 2015 Edition

A year in review. Where to start. We had our largest event ever last Spring (the game was for Magic the Gathering), as well as a growth in local judges. Organized play across the board has been up, and a lot of new faces and friends in the shop.

We have had some big upsets and growths this year. All in all, the shop continues stronger than ever. This is largely due to the Magelings (that’s what I call the staff, players, teachers-of-games, basically the people who walk through the doors and share their nerdery with others). When the name for the store was being discussed, we obviously agreed upon Magelings Games. “Mage” – a wizard of junior status normally, “lings” – from the concept of a halfling. A place for both personal growth and training. Also somewhere fun and light-hearted. I think we accomplished that and continue to do so. We have some of the best gaming communities I’ve ever seen! From top finishers at competitive Magic and Yu-Gi-Oh events to game designers. There is a wealth of knowledge in the shop from professional paths to nerdery to hobbies and special interests.

Looking at 2015, we have some challenges in front of us. How to we continue to set the pace for CCG events in Mid Missouri? How do we crack the wargaming tournament nut? Can we implement a player reward system, what does it look like? What new organized play do we add? Do any get dropped? How will we rearrange the shop to meet 2015? Will we ever find Waldo?

These and more questions weigh on us. Thankfully we have a wonderful group that regularly grace our doors and give us loads of feedback.

Things to look forward to:
-Incentives offered for bringing new players into the fold, regardless of the system.
-Changes in the weekly line-up.
-The most kick-ass Iron Man challenges and rewards as we round out the Khans block. Did you know that it is the last three release block being printed for Magic?
-More high stakes Legacy events for Magic.
-On-line shopping. Browse our inventory from the comfort of your home, or while playing on your phone.

Why Iron Man?  Traditionally we have given some very big prizes such as FtV and Commander decks.  This time though, it’s big and unique.  So big, I dare say no other store in the area will be giving away such a thing.  So unique, I’d say there will not be another like it.  I’m not going to say what it is, but I will say we will not be giving it away until the Spring.  There will be a BLOCK long Iron Man competition.  Missing out on an Iron Man Sunday will not prevent the player from the final prize but may hamper their efforts.  This is solely based on the performances of the other competitors.

Register in shop or online: http://mkt.com/magelings-games/m-prerelease

First, there are no “packages” for this weekend.  Those that bought them enjoyed them, but they were not popular enough to warrant the stock levels required to make it an open option.

What are we offering you ask?

Every player gets free entry into the 6:30pm draft July 18th!

Iron Man
So what does this mean for Iron Man?  You need to compete in 5 events still but you’ll note that the Saturday morning event may go quite long.  All the way up to 2HG, and that’s the idea.  If you make the top cut for Saturday morning, that will act as a whole new event for your standings.  We will count the BEST 5 events you have, with 3 points a win, 1 point a draw, and 0 for a loss.

VIP Package
This is new, and I’m pretty excited for it.  You will get personalized spacious seating as well as beverages, light food and an attendant.  All that for $25.  No taking your trash off the table, you don’t even have to get up for lands if you don’t want.  Need a fresh pack of sleeves?  Your attendant will get them for you and bring a register to your table for you.
There is limited availability for this package, so act fast.

Summer Warhammer 40k/Painting Camp July 21 – 25 2014

Kids and Games Workshop

The hobby offers a whole lot more than you think.

School is out and traditional camps are over, but you don’t want Little Johnny sitting around the house.   Or maybe it’s your daughter Sally Shoemaucker, and while she is mature you can’t leave her home all day and she doesn’t want to visit with the in-laws.  No worries, we’ve got you covered!

The quick version: give us $150 and your kids for a week of afternoons, and we will send them home with excited stories of fun, custom models, hobby tools and paints.  The camper needs to be at least 8 years old.
Register and pay now, or continue reading the whole deal below.

Painting and focus go hand in hand.

Painting and focus go hand in hand.

This summer we are offering a week long summer camp centered around Warhammer 40,000.  This camp focuses on painting, team play, and sportsmanship.  We have daily benchmarks for students to make while integrating experiential play into their afternoons.  Around the middle of each afternoon we are going to take a quick break and have a snack to recharge.

As a veteran teacher, I find that students learn far more when pursuing something and being engaged rather than when told a statement and given structured micro-managed steps.  We could say that we are going to teach color theory, “light” physics, social skills, mathematics, literacy, critical thinking and strategic planning as a way to get people excited in attending.  But that is really what parents want to hear.  Every day the campers will be engaged in all of these and then some.  This week is not about “button mashing” and sitting on a couch, it is hands-on and involved.

You can read what Games Workshop has to say about their line here.  Microsoft has some thoughts on game based learning as well.  You can also follow a collective body of research on gaming and electronic gaming benefits if you have more time.

Our itinerary:
Daily
Noon – 5 pm camp in session
Noon – 12:15 pm arrival, set-up for first activity
2:45 pm – 3 pm snack

Monday
Introduction and orientation
Sportsmanship
“Battle clinic” on basic game play and strategy

Tuesday
How to assemble an army
Painting – priming and blocking colors
Field test

Wednesday
Back story and lore of the Warhammer universe
Forces within the universe
Painting – Washes and details
Field test

Thursday
Painting – Dry brushing, highlighting, and basing
Battle ready

Friday
Mega battle all day
Sportsmanship award
Graduation

Campers get various supplies and take them home at the end.

Campers get a starter set, a box of Space Marines, and a whole bunch of brushes.

If you have any questions, please contact me directly!  I’m Nat, and I am frequently in the shop during the week but you can be guaranteed to find me every Friday.  Or e-mail if you like: nat@magelingsgames.com.  But if you are comfortable with all this, go ahead and register and pay now.

Cancellation Policy

We understand that things occur outside the ability of a person to control and provide the following cancellation policy:
Prior to July 7th – if for whatever reason your camper is unable to attend you will receive a full refund.
July 7th to 13th – if for whatever reason your camper is unable to attend you will receive 75% refund.
July 14th and later – No refunds will be granted. All camp materials will be provided for use at home.

Hitting the Big Time

This weekend was a busy one for the shop. Theros Game Day, stop 3 on the Hero’s Quest, was a blast that pitted players against each other to prove who was the store champion. Additionally, players could solo queue or team up to tackle the Hydra Challenge to gain Slayer status. The Warhammer 40k group hosted a 2nd Apocalypse tournament, bringing the pain of big artillery and tanks to the glory of the battlefield. Sunday also saw us host a Grand Prix Trial for Washington, D.C. in addition to our regularly scheduled MTG Rare-Redraft and Competitive Yu-Gi-Oh! Be sure to check out all of the pictures of each of the events in the Magelings picture album on Facebook.

Arguably the biggest event, and the one that impacted me the most personally, was the Kaijudo Master Challenge (KMC). As many of you know, Magelings has gone all-in to support Wizards of the Coast in their newest endeavor and we were fortunate enough to had been selected to run one of these highly competitive, highly sought after events. The KMC events grant access to both first and second place finishers to the invite-only Championships, held in the Summer and Winter. Thus far, there has been one Summer Championship–taken down by Bobby Brake of AlteRealityGames–and the upcoming Winter Championship, to be held on the weekend of November 23-24th. So pretty big stuff for the shop!

The KMC was a great success and everyone had a ton of fun! We had 31 players, coming from numerous areas, including all across Missouri and our surrounding states of Illinois, Tennessee, and Texas. Additionally, we got some of the most known personalities in all of Kaijudo, including KaijudoGirl Lacy Stovall and the Champ himself, Bobby Brake! Custom Kaijudo cupcakes greeted players as the registered for the event and after the player meeting, everyone prepared themselves for a grueling 5 rounds of play before we cut to Top 8. We still had the ever-amazing CoMo Dough Wood-Fired Pizza Food Truck coming, a Create-A-Card Contest that became our official KMC Promo, and our popular Duel Days firing for those who weren’t fortunate enough to be one of the eight cylons players. Approximately 8 hours later, the dust had settled, and our top 8 looked like this:

1st Place — Ryan Bishop : LWD Tempo

2nd Place — Joshua Heeter : LWD Enforcer Tempo

3rd Place — Bobby Brake : LWD Tempo

Five locals in top 8! I was fortunate enough to get the 2nd slot, losing to the cool-headed and super skilled Ryan Bishop, a well-known and multiple KMC prizewinner. So I’m headed to Texas for the Winter Champs to represent Magelings with (hopefully) a few of the other Team *soon to be re-named* members. I think the most exciting part of the top 8 was seeing 2 really unique home-brew decklists, piloted by Jimtu Hogue and Jordan Naeger, do amazingly well on the day. Both lists are the subject of lots of discussion online now and both also won their respective civilizations, resulting in some additional amazing prizes!

So that’s a wrap. If you’ve been on the fence about giving Kaijudo a try, now is the perfect time to get in. We have the new set dropping shortly, with the Set Premier coming on November 9th. I, Riley, or pretty much any of the Kaijudo players are more than willing to give you a demo of the game and the store provides you with your very first demo deck that is ready to go straight out of the box…for free! Tournaments are held twice per week (Thursday and Saturday), have a $3 entry fee, and everyone is guaranteed a $4 pack for entering. So come join us in one of the newest, most fun games I’ve ever had the pleasure to play. 😀 JoshKaijudo Logo

League Needs Heroes and Heroines!

I'd hate to run into this guy in a dark alley!

I’d hate to run into this guy in a dark alley!

Everyone here at Magelings Games is excited for Theros, the upcoming Magic: the Gathering set, in their own ways. If you haven’t already, be sure to read Nat’s post on how we’re structuring our prerelease to benefit players and ensure you get the most bang for your buck. I’m here to tell you about how we’ll be running the Theros League on Wednesday Nights. League is designed to be a more laid back and more fun environment that helps balance the playing field for all players.

League will begin on Wednesday, October 2nd at 7pm. Players will begin by picking an intro pack of their choice that will serve as their deck throughout the course of the 19 week league. That’s right players: Theros League is going to run the ENTIRE 3 month period until Born of the Gods launches!

Therosart04The most visible difference will be the giant, painted cardboard mountain placed on west wall. I call this the Mountain of the Gods. This mountain will serve as your path to victory during league and will give you an idea what the League schedule will look like each week. Players will also be able to use a hero card (spoilers!)from the Theros Prerelease packs once they’ve completed a specific quest on the mountain.

Leveling Up
Therosart01Theros is a flavorful set and League is going to follow that trend closely. Players will earn experience points (XP) throughout their matches and level up, similar to playing in an RPG. This matters for 2 important reasons. During League you’ll be able to upgrade your decks by purchasing more packs if you so choose. However, you can only add a pack when you level up. The second reason is much more important: the person with the most levels will win the League at the end of the season! I’ll keep track of all XP progression at the front deck.

Challenge Weeks
Therosart08These will be marked on the Mountain of the Gods so players have some idea what they are facing. Every 5th week will be a limited draft event, either a special Theros Repack ($3) or a Rare Redraft ($8). If you haven’t drafted much, don’t worry because we’ll help teach you the ins-&-outs. Some weeks players may have to face the whimsical interventions of the Gods, who like to meddle in the affairs of mortals. Other weeks players will have to team up to take on special quest decks to take down mythological beasts. My favorite of these I’m calling The Labyrinth. 🙂 Beware: the challenges may not be held to the same restrictions you as players are held to.

I hope you guys are as excited as I am to try this revamped League structure. If you have any questions or concerns. Feel free to leave a comment or see me at the shop. I’d love to see people sign up on the facebook events page for League but it isn’t required. Until the next time, keep on gaming! – Josh
