Magic Prereleases [O]

Hello, and thank you for considering attending a Magic the Gathering prerelease at Magelings Games!  This is our [O]fficial standard procedures for Magic prereleases.  Please confirm with staff if there are any deviations from the below:

Preregistration: $25, closes the Sunday before the prerelease.  For Eldritch Moon, preregistration will close Thursday July 14th.

Event Times:
Saturday
12:01 AM, Sealed, registration closes 11:50 PM Friday
11:00 AM, Sealed, registration closes 10:50 AM
4:00 PM, Sealed, registration closes 3:50 PM
8:00 PM, Two-Headed Giant Sealed, registration closes 7:50 PM

Sunday
11:00 AM, Two-Headed Giant Sealed, registration closes 10:50 AM
4:00 PM, Sealed, registration closes 3:50 PM

-Preregistered players are required to check in prior to close of registration.
-Late registrations will be accommodated as possible after other tournament activities are fulfilled.

Payouts
We will play four rounds of Swiss for each event.  Regular events are payed out as follows:
4 – 0 10 packs
3 – 0 – 1 6 packs
3 – 1 4 packs
2 – X 1 pack

Two-Headed Giant payouts are difficult to standardize to achieve our desired pack payouts due to the amount of games that go to a draw.  Each member of a team will receive one pack for playing the event and an additional pack per win.  Additional packs may be awarded, post event, to raise the average pack payout.

Other Rewards
-All players that complete the midnight event will be preregistered for the release draft (occurring the following Friday) for free.  The player must play all four rounds, this precludes intentional draws and concessions.  Midnight qualifies as an Iron Wo/Man event, but is not eligible for other rewards.
-The Iron Man Challenge.  See below.
– Events will have door prizes after the first round, based on attendance.  This includes things such as deck boxes, sleeves, binders, dice, etc.
-Events with 50+ players will have an additional door prize of a fat pack claimable on release day (or one in stock if an older set is desired).
-Events with 75+ players will have an additional door prize of a booster box claimable on release day (or one in stock if an older Standard set is desired).
-Events with 85+ players will have an additional door prize of a booster box claimable on release day (or one in stock if an older Standard set is desired).

Iron Wo/Man Challenge

The mightiest of the mighty.  This grand ordeal is for Magic players of the highest endurances.  One must play five of the six scheduled events to qualify.

Specific rules
-An event will not count towards meeting the challenge if the player intentionally draws in a round, concedes a round, or drops from the event.
-Playing a sixth event can replace the score of the weakest among the previous five.

Iron Wo/Man Rewards
-Every contestant receives a commemorative life pad.
-Every contestant receives a promo pack consisting of seven cards.
-A special limited event will be held the following Sunday at 12:30 PM, invites will be announced during the week.  Invitations are extended based on standing and total amount of contestants, the limited event itself is free.  Additional rewards may be distributed upon the completion of the event.

Brewers League

Alchemy-gimp-16714872-1288-768Calling all crafters, brewers, and schemers! Annoucing Brewers Guildhouse!

The Guildhouse will be a community run deck crafting collective. Current spokespersons are Casey Biffle, Matt Haruza, and Stephen Schwartz. The goal is to have fun with ALL your cards, just not those dominating the current metagame. There will be monthly challenges issued, and every Thursday craftsmen will meet up and show off their ‘brew’.

craft-pestle-and-mortar-in-blackLead-in weeks will begin at 7 pm, and the guild masters will be there early to go over legality of builds. These nights will play three rounds of Swiss to test out brews and collaborate on possible changes. On Challenge Nights we will begin Swiss at 6:30 pm and run full Swiss.

Like our Wednesday night league play, this program will offer some sweet prizes and give incentives for play.
Lead-in #2 – Ability to participate in monthly challenge night.
Lead-in #3 – Garunteed prizes at the challenge
Challenge Night – Prizes based on attendance, in-line with FNM offerings. Will be a point-based system where players can take packs, promo’s, sleeves, etc as their winnings at the end of the night.

Current Challenge:

Citizen-Game-star-trek-II-the-wrath-of-khan

That’s right, an homage to Khans.  More specifically, your brew must contain a minimum for 20 cards from Khans and/or Fate (not including basic land).  As we are about to rotate into a new format, it is time to say goodbye to our personal favorites that didn’t get their time in the spotlight.

SCG States Oct 17/18

As I write this, the final round of our weekend of Battle for Zendikar prerelease events are wrapping up.  What better time than to talk about our next big community event?  We are hosting Star City Games Autumn State Championships in just a few weeks, and are very excited for the new shift in Standard.  The brewers have been convening all weekend, theory-crafting and prophesying what is about to storm the scene.  On our end we have been gathering some of the best judges that the state has to offer and figuring how to give you the best event possible.

Preregister here.

Star City Games has a standard for event payouts based on attendance:
States Payouts
This list is pretty strong!  We are going to be hosting the event in shop this time around, and we will need to put an attendance cap on things.  Because of this, we wanted to give strong incentive for people to preregister for the events.  For each threshold we reach in the preregistration pool one person will be selected at random to win the listed prize.  With a nod to what the organizers of GP’s have been doing, here is our preregistration bonus:

Your head judge for Saturday will be Billy Gilmore and Maximilian Schroeder for Sunday.  For those wishing to spend the night and play both events (and get entered in the prize drawing twice if preregistered) there are plenty of hotels in town with the Red Roof Inn (on E Texas Ave) and a Quality Inn (on N Providence Rd) in walking distance.

I am super excited, I hope you are too!

Why Iron Man?   It is an amazing time, and you’ll meet other hardcore players like yourself.  It truly is an endurance challenge, so get ready to push yourself through Saturday.  Besides all the great stuff we give out over the prerelease weekend, all Iron (Wo)Men are invited to another game for FREE!  This is modified sealed, you must build a 60 card deck with what you opened during the prerelease.  We love this challenge so much that we break out the special prizes for this event, in the past we’ve given out GOLD.  Stay tuned for updates to the Iron Man prize pool.

Timing details:
Player seating will be posted 25 minutes after the above mentioned times.  Announcements will be made and product will be handed out.  For the midnight event we will be seating players at 12:01 am and handing out immediately after announcments.  There will be AT MOST 40 minutes to build decks before round 1 pairings are posted.  Midnight pairings at 12:45 am at the latest is our goal.  That gives roughly an hour from the posted time before game 1 starts.  Players who  are not ready for round 1, showed up late for example, will receive a loss for that round.

Modern Masters 2015

MM15 ChampOh boy, there is a lot of excitement on this eh?  We are still waiting for the official spoilers to come out, and honestly I’ve been asked about this product since last Fall.  In the last week I’ve gotten numbers from distributors and Wizards, so I have a reasonable idea of what to expect and I’m still trying to get more.  So without further ado, here are the things I think you want to know:

Preorders
A set amount of product is being reserved so you can reserve it!  We will be taking preorders on MM15 starting 5/9.  It is my belief that there will be more spoilers by this point and there will be a more accurate market value for the product.  How are we going to be pricing?  Well, if you want a box you will pay no more than $240 (effectively pack price).  If the market value for this item is lower than expected, then we will adjust downwards.  If the market value for this item is higher than expected, then we will NOT adjust.  That’s right, we are not going over the effective MSRP for Modern Masters for your first box.  Any box beyond the first will be ballpark market (I’ve seen as high as 300), likely lower than the industry leader SCG, which I noted they have already sold out of some items.

Modern Masters League
We are setting aside some product for a month long league.  It will meet Monday nights in June.  Entry is $60, and you can add packs to your pool over the course of the league at $10! There will be a League finale June 29th, with payouts in Modern Masters!  Look for further details on the league.  I strongly encourage pre-enrolling for it.
http://mkt.com/magelings-games/modern-masters-league

Drafts
We will be drafting in pods of 8 over the opening weekend.  Cost is $50, and payouts are as follows (in more Modern Masters packs!)
1st 8 packs
2nd 4 packs
3rd/4th 2 packs
5th/8th 1 pack
We will also be withholding a few boxes for drafts over the summer.

So with our allotment we are holding items in this order:
Preorders
MM League
Summer drafts
Opening weekend drafts

I feel that this is supports our collectors and players.  Those that are heading for the nutter-butter event that is Vegas will still have access when they return, and those that aren’t can enjoy an awesome weekend in the shop.  And so we are about to kick off an exciting summer of Magic and gaming!

40K Escalation

imperial bird

2015 Magelings Warhammer 40K Escalation League

The purpose of an Escalation League is for players to compete in a number of battles using the basic Warhammer 40,000 rules set along with certain limitations during a month’s worth of gaming.

This is an open league to promote growth within the local community regardless of prior experience.  Veteran players are encouraged to be informative and helpful with less experience players; and the “Win At All Cost” attitude should be discouraged.

All players are encouraged to “try something new” whether this be your first time with 40K or for an experienced player maybe consider a new army, or an old army you haven’t played with in some time and might need to have the dust knocked-off.

As a community fair play, promoting the hobby, and spirit of the game is always a goal.

Entry Fee: $20

League play will be different this year; all players will have an opportunity to play both league paired games and new challenge matches.  Both paired play and challenge matches will be calculated into league standings, the more you play the better you are likely to stand.

Paired Play: Four random pairings per month.  Opponents will be expected to make private arrangements to play.  In store play is encouraged but not required.

Challenge Matches: Specific challenge days will be designated for in store play only.  Challengers may come to the store and challenge any other player regardless of pairings.  Whether this is just a “first come” challenge or someone you haven’t been able to previously play the choice is yours (and theirs).  There is no league penalty for turning down a challenge but remember each challenge game provides the same number of points as paired play so the more you play the greater your chance of a higher rank.

Reward:  The top players at the end of the league, determined as a proportion of total players, will win store credit based on their overall score.  There will be a “Hobbyist” prize for the most complete army, as determined by Magelings staff.  Additionally there will be raffled prizes distributed to other players in the league that did not win in the previous categories.

League Schedule: The league will be over 4 months, shorter than previous years.

Feb-May

Challenge Matches: Alternating Sundays beginning Week 2 of league

Month 1:  750 pts, 1(only) HQ and 2+ Troops mandatory; max 0-1 Elite or 0-1 Heavy or 0-1 Fast.  No LoW, No Data Slates/Formations, No Allies, No Fortifications.  Eternal War Missions Only.

Month 2:  1250 pts: Using detachment organization charts from “Warhammer 40,000: The Rules,” maximum 1 Combined Arms Detachment from “Warhammer 40,000: The Rules” only.  No Allies, Data Slates, Formations, Lords of War, Fortifications.  Eternal War Missions Only.

Month 3:  1850 pts: Using detachment organization charts from “Warhammer 40,000: The Rules,” Maximum 1 Combined Arms Detachment (w/Fortifications) and 1 Allied Detachment (may represent a different army) or 1 Data Slate/Formation.  No LoW. Maelstrom of War Missions permitted but not required.

Month 4:  2250 pts:  Using detachment organization charts from “Warhammer 40,000: The Rules,” Maximum 1 Combined Arms Detachment (w/Fortifications) and 1 Allied Detachment (may represent a different army) or 1 Data Slate/Formation, Lords of War are allowed.  Maelstrom of War Missions permitted but not required.

Scoring*:

No-Show: 0
Loss: 3 points
Tie: 5 points
Win: 7 Points

Crushing Victory: 10 Points- Scored only if you triple your opponents victory points or remove every model from the table (example final score: 8-4 Win, 9-3 Crushing Victory).

If an arranged match is a “no-show” and the match cannot be rescheduled within the same month the player who made the appearance will receive a Tie score.

*Remember, Challenge Matches score the same as paired play.

FAQ:

Is there a restriction on vehicle Armor values?

No, players should account for the need to deal with heavy armor beginning the first month.

Are named characters allowed?

Yes, however, some named characters are now classified as Lords of War and would be subject to any restrictions on these entries.

Can I use Forge World?

Yes, but only for specific units.  Complete army lists derived from Forge World materials are not allowed.  This would include army lists from any of the Imperial Armour or Horus Heresy books.  Printed copies of unit rules are encouraged.  Also you may not use those rules which are marked “experimental.”

Do Armies need to be WYSIWYG?

Players are encouraged to formulate their army lists in such a way that they are appropriately modeled.  Some exceptions can be made but a clear and concerted effort must be made to describe the differences.

May I change Armies during the league?

Army selection can only be altered between the first and second months of gaming and only a one-time change is allowed.

Furthermore players must build upon their pre-existing list; however, players may alter 1 unit entry, this is to account for a unit not performing as anticipated.  This is to be done between months of play and not within a given month.

If my Army receives a new codex which must I use?

If a codex was released prior to the start of a given month of gaming you must use the most current codex, it will be players discretion on whether they use old or new during the same month it is released.  (example: A codex updates in week 2 of the first month, the player must begin the second month of gaming with the new codex but may retain the older codex for the remainder of the first month if they want.)

Can I use Codex supplements?

Yes, supplements to existing codices are considered valid.  Printed versions of supplements are encouraged.

Helpful Hints:

1.       A single die should be considered as “cocked” if another die cannot be placed upon the surface of die in question and not slide in any manner.

2.       When expected to roll multiple dice to determine the results of an action players should roll the maximum needed for an effective result each time.

  • Example: In WH40K you have 7 wounds on a unit of 8 models without a character model, all 7 results should be rolled at once.  If a character model is included the maximum dice can be reduced to the number of models preceding the character and rolled until further actions are needed (“look-out Sir!”).  Continue on once dice been expended.

3.      Disputes should try to be resolved between opponents in a calm manner prior to engaging with a Staff member;  if parties cannot agree to a solution, it is advisable to “roll for it” by assigning either a higher/lower value to each players interpretation and rolling a single die (or both players rolling a die, the higher being the one selected) for a random ruling.

4.       Terrain: Players are welcome to agree amongst themselves as to the appropriate placement of terrain.  All terrain should be placed prior to selection of deployment area and done is such a way to minimize any advantage.

  • It is recommended to randomize placement of terrain by using dice for placement.  This can be accomplished by using two dice, a scatter die and a single D6.  Players alternate placing all terrain.  After the last piece is placed the terrain is scattered using this method.
  • Roll the dice for each piece.  If an Arrow is rolled move the terrain the number of inches shown on the D6 in the direction indicated.  If a “hit” is rolled on the scatter die then the distance shown is halved (rounding down) on the D6, thus a roll of 1 keeps the piece in place; use the small arrow for direction.  If scatter would place terrain less than 6 inches from another piece of terrain or any table edge then the distance scattered should be reduced the minimum distance necessary to be at least 6 inches from other terrain or board edge.

Iron Man

There are changes to Iron Man.  Like before you must play 5 events, and you may count the cut to top X in the Sunday game as a separate event.  All Iron Man competitors must register their pools.  There is a follow-up event for all competitors, and are invited back to Magelings for a Quasi-Constructed on Sunday January 25th starting at 1pm.  Players must register by 12:45pm, the event is free.  Decks may be comprised of only cards from the registered pools.  Deck registrations will be made available no later than Wednesday prior to the game.  Without sufficient registered pools, the player will not be allowed to compete the following Sunday.

Why Iron Man?   We have hinted that there is a big prize and Iron Man is the only way to it.  Every prerelease this block counts, that’s right a block long competition is running and you can join in now if you haven’t already.  Iron Man Sunday is a standing tradition that continues to grow.  If we have 12+ contestants on Sunday, they will find a new sealed Duel Deck: Anthologies waiting at the Top 8.  Missing out on an Iron Man Sunday will not prevent the player from the final prize but may hamper their efforts.  This is solely based on the performances of the other competitors.

A New Year, 2015 Edition

A year in review. Where to start. We had our largest event ever last Spring (the game was for Magic the Gathering), as well as a growth in local judges. Organized play across the board has been up, and a lot of new faces and friends in the shop.

We have had some big upsets and growths this year. All in all, the shop continues stronger than ever. This is largely due to the Magelings (that’s what I call the staff, players, teachers-of-games, basically the people who walk through the doors and share their nerdery with others). When the name for the store was being discussed, we obviously agreed upon Magelings Games. “Mage” – a wizard of junior status normally, “lings” – from the concept of a halfling. A place for both personal growth and training. Also somewhere fun and light-hearted. I think we accomplished that and continue to do so. We have some of the best gaming communities I’ve ever seen! From top finishers at competitive Magic and Yu-Gi-Oh events to game designers. There is a wealth of knowledge in the shop from professional paths to nerdery to hobbies and special interests.

Looking at 2015, we have some challenges in front of us. How to we continue to set the pace for CCG events in Mid Missouri? How do we crack the wargaming tournament nut? Can we implement a player reward system, what does it look like? What new organized play do we add? Do any get dropped? How will we rearrange the shop to meet 2015? Will we ever find Waldo?

These and more questions weigh on us. Thankfully we have a wonderful group that regularly grace our doors and give us loads of feedback.

Things to look forward to:
-Incentives offered for bringing new players into the fold, regardless of the system.
-Changes in the weekly line-up.
-The most kick-ass Iron Man challenges and rewards as we round out the Khans block. Did you know that it is the last three release block being printed for Magic?
-More high stakes Legacy events for Magic.
-On-line shopping. Browse our inventory from the comfort of your home, or while playing on your phone.

42 Hours

A lot can be done in 42 hours, may loaves baked and roasts roasted.  Essays composed and written.  A road trip to Chicago even.

Or.

Or, you could use that time to raise awareness and funds for the sick.  You could donate that time and go days without sleep, allowing yourself to slip into madness so that families may escape it.

So what are we going to do this weekend?  Well, I’m going to let you hear Jesse and his thoughts on community service.

Our schedule:

Saturday
12:00 a.m. – 42 hours of Yu-Gi-Oh! streaming on Twitch.
2:00 a.m. – a showing of “There Will Be Brawl”, featuring the cast of Super Smash Brothers Brawl.
12:30 p.m. – Kaijudo Duel Days.  All entries to Extra Life.
2:00 p.m. – Magic, Modern format.  All entries to Extra Life.
5:00 p.m. – Dragon Ball Z tournament.  All entries to Extra Life.  We have a special uncut sheet of the DBZ game for first place.
All day – demo’s of Kaijudo.  Featured game line, Looney Labs, demos on demand… yours or ours.

Sunday
8:00 a.m. – Warhammer 40k Apocalypse
10:00 a.m. – Magic Legacy IQ
5:30 p.m. -Closing out the 42 hours, Dr. Bronson will conclude the Twitch stream with an original Yugi vs. Kaiba deck duel!

That’s not all.  We will be donating a portion of all board game and miniature (and accessories) sales made over the weekend.  Why?  Well, altruism of course.  That AND our local hospital is *this* close to receiving an additional $30,000 dollars.  What do we need to do?  Raise the most funds per capita.  As of now, we are in 10th!

Southern Hobby, great folks and a major supplier for the shop, has donated a box of goodies for our events this weekend.  These will be given out randomly during our events.  The uncut sheet for the Dragon Ball Z tournament has come from Panini!

So check out Jesses’ Twitch feed and see if he descends into madness.
Donate directly to Extra Life, via our page, here.  Maybe consider making your own personal plea and join our team.  All in-shop donations will be posted by midnight the day made.
